Covered In Pink Lemonade: A Text Interview With @Sentient_Meat (AKA Sarah Machan)

Instagram has its fair share of weirdoes, but there also a lot of wonderfully creative people who are discovering that the platform is a great way to express themselves. Sarah Machan (@Sentient_Meat) fits in the latter category – she may be a weirdo, but there is distinct intention behind her machinations on the social media photo-sharing site. She is young and may not know that she is creating a form of digital performance art, but with her blonde hair, seductive glances and strangely literary captions, she comes off as a tempting Lolita that may or may not murder you in her Toronto apartment. The following is a transcript of our text interview with Sarah who was kind enough to offer us a little insight into her beautifully creepy world.

So, my first question is: who is @sentient_meat?

A 19 year old girl named Sarah Machan.

There seems to be a performative aspect to what you are doing on Instagram. Would you say that is true?

I don't like to think too much about what I'm doing or why I'm doing it in general. There's no agenda or purpose whatsoever to the things I post, it's just me going through my daily life and documenting it like so many other people my age do. I guess it is a performance on some level (a cry for help? Lol) but isn't all social media kind of?

Well, it's very seductive, even erotic, and it seems like you are creating a character - it's actually very cinematic or literary - or is it just a cry for help?

It is a little like that, almost like an alter ego, but that's not all it is. It's a place I feel comfortable expressing myself in because it doesn't feel quite so vulnerable compared to real life. I'm able to draw from things that pique my interest and create something new and be whomever I want, it's fun and weird. It's also probably a reflection of my mental stability, or lack thereof. Everyone's a little crazy, right????

Everyone is a little crazy - you are totally right!! But it's great to have an outlet to express that creativity. How long have you been on Instagram?

According to my first post- 108 weeks! I have deleted a lot, however. I think I was maybe 16 when I joined.

You probably get a lot of weird responses from people...what has the been the weirdest thus far?

That's tough. I get a lot of dick pics, I get a lot of people telling me that I'm disgusting, I get a lot of people telling me they love me, a lot of people call me 'lolita.' It's all weird

Are your photos posed or spontaneous...they seem like very intimate portraits taken just before you leave the house?

They're all spontaneous, I'll take a picture if I feel like taking one in the moment.

There's a lot of materials used in your images: blood, slime, glitter - can you talk a little bit about your use of materials?

I guess the materials I use, their colors, are what make the shot interesting to me. I like things that look kind of gross.

What is your favorite thing to do in Toronto?

Never leave the apartment

What do you want people to know about you that they don't know already?

Nothing. I've said too much already

Ok, last question! Can you create a special selfie for this interview?

You'll have to follow @sentient_meat for that!
