Creation, destruction, boom, ghost. In the song 'I'm a Shoe,' Cass references the California boomtown / ghost town of Bodie, a town that rose to peak population in the late 1800's gold rush. As people swarmed Bodie and scrambled to strike it rich, the town developed an unrivaled reputation for great violence, murder and a much feared figure - the ‘Bad Man of Bodie.’ The video for 'I’m a Shoe' was filmed at the ghost town of Mare Island, Vallejo, California which in the chronology of California boomtown /ghost towns, directly follows the demise of Bodie. Bodie’s official end and Mare Island’s boom both came about to service the needs of World War II. The Roosevelt’s government’s War Production Board ordered the closure of Bodie’s gold mines in order to divert labor and equipment to the requirements of the war. Mare Island peaked at this time employing over 40,000 people building warships and submarines, it now sits in ruins. It is a very compelling ghost town with a strange discomforting atmosphere. Art-pop provocateurs Xiu Xiu have shared a new animated video for “Jenny GoGo,” a song from the band’s upcoming 11th collection of original music, Forget. Evoking Throbbing Gristle circa 20 Jazz Funk Greats and the dark pop of classic coldwave, “Jenny GoGo” merges Dada-esque absurdity, brooding atmosphere, and infectious earworms. The video was directed by Victor Belozerov. It is out Febuary 24th on Polyvinyl Record Company.

WALTZ VOL. 1 – Body Basics is the debut LP delivered by Australian-born, New York based artist Matthew J. Hutchinson, who will release his art-damaged pop album, produced by Kevin McMahon, as a 65 minute, 14-part VHS film as well as on 12" vinyl. It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away at his home in Los Angeles. We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date.

Of all the great unions of underground music, rock and otherwise; Bowie and Eno, Nick Cave and Blixa Bargeld, Justin Broadrick and Kevin Martin, John Cale and Terry Riley, Sonny Sharrock and Peter Brotzzman, and so on; the union between No Wave icon, transgressive artist, and spoken word warrior Lydia Lunch and free jazz, noise, and no wave musician Weasel Walter is perhaps the most harmonious and unquestionably the unholiest. When considering their respective biographies, both full of moments of sticking the middle finger in the faces of conventional standards of taste and decency, it’s difficult to believe that these revolutionaries didn’t find each other sooner.
