Nicolas Jaar's Prism of Music

The immensely talented Nicolas Jaar and his own record label Clown & Sunset label have released a compilation of music, entitled Don't Break My Love, in the form of an aluminum cube called The Prism. With music by Jaar himself, Nikita Quasim, Vtgnike, Valentin Stip and much more. Designed by Jaar, the Prism format is meant to retain a physicality in music and promote connectivity, with two headphone jacks on either side of the rechargeable cube. Four buttons allow listeners to start, pause, and skip through tracks.

21 year old Nicolas Jaar grew up between Santiago, Chile and New York City, riding the cross currents of musical influences. At 17 Jaar made is debut with his first record on record label Wolf & Lamb, but now runs his own show with a record label called Clown & Sunset. His long, infectious melodies rely on distinctly Jaarian beats that include lots of echoes, sound effects, and strong, haunting, beautiful, multidimensional layers of vocals. Together with guitarist Dave Harrington, Jaar has just released a new EP under the name Darkside. With hints of Pink Floyd's soaring choruses and interludes, Darkside's new EP is the perfect soundtrack to being buried alive with the girl of your dreams.

A member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, he is the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States with a solo presentation at the Venice Biennale. Gaetano Pesce (1939–2024) “The time of copies is behind us. We are in a time of originals.” Very sad to hear the news of Pesce’s passing, a legendary architect and designer with a meteoric influence on design, both in practice and theory. He was featured in our Utopia issue (SS23) alongside other giants of the Italian Radical Design movement. His work was deeply political and revolutionary—even a simple chair was an act of resistance.
