Études Releases Book N°26 With Artist Alessio Bolzoni Titled "I SPEAK A LANGUAGE THAT IS NOT MINE"

Since its inception, the independent publishing house, Études Books, has showcased the multi-disciplinary creations of artists from the contemporary art scene. Among the fall publications of 2022, Études Books is pleased to unveil book N°26, created with renowned Italian artist, Alessio Bolzoni.

For the London-based photographer, the personification of objects and the body caught between two states are favorite themes. Featured in past collaborations between Bolzoni and Études, these topics resurface in I SPEAK A LANGUAGE THAT IS NOT MINE. The book is the expression of a visual reflection through fragments, recurrences, and visual scansions.

Digital photographs, scans, facsimiles, screenshots: these various images, put in relation to one another, compose a mental cartography of the artists’ state of mind. Bodies in motion, chromatic analogies, skin details, plastic textures, and press clippings instill a dynamic impression of uncanniness.

The term “abuse”—referring to the eponymous titles of Bolzoni’s previous books—takes on an evocative power and invites us to question our relationship to images. The result is an intimate visual poem about form and substance. “It’s an observation of reality as I see it—a personal, social, and political registration of reality filtered through the lens of photo notes. Every detail tells a story and reveals something about my practice of living. This is my language.” —Alessio Bolzoni

With the launch of Alessio Bolzoni’s book, Études Studio is pleased to inaugurate its new 14.1 space. Envisioned as a place dedicated to creativity beyond the world of fashion, this space will welcome exhibitions by emerging artists, photographers, and Études collaborators, as well as various artistic events. Located above Études’ Paris flagship, 14.1 reinforces the studio’s initial wish to reflect and drive the contemporary creative landscape.

Études Books is an independent publisher, operating from Paris, with a will to present a new photographic and artistic scene with each publication. The official release was November 09, 2022. The book is available on etudes-studio.com/books and selected bookstores worldwide.

Growing Up In Wallace Berman's World: Read Our Interview With Tosh Berman

Wallace Berman carves a mysterious, counter-cultural figure in the cave wall of Los Angeles folklore. His legend is enhanced by a tragically early death on his fiftieth birthday as a result of an automobile crash with a drunk driver in Topanga Canyon, further cementing his myth as the beatnik of the Southern California chaparrals.

In a new memoir, entitled Tosh, Berman’s son opens the opaque curtain on the enigmatic artist through a bildungsroman of the Beat Generation and hippie counterculture, a childhood on the frontlines of 1960s Los Angeles and San Francisco freakdom. Tosh Berman and Jason Schwartzman got together for a public conversation at Skylight Books to discuss his memoir and growing up in Wallace Berman’s world. Click here to read more.

Arturo Oliva Pedroza Releases 'Kissed Face' Book Alongside Exhibition @ Book & Job Gallery In San Francisco.

When asked to picture the streets of Paris, it might be challenging to deviate from images of the crowded boulevards, full of the café-concerts made popular by the end of the nineteenth century, with bodies dancing through the streets to the notes of Joe Dassin’s Les Champs Élysées or Edith Piaf’s La Vie en Rose. Arturo Oliva Pedroza’s Kissed Face offers something else. Instead, Pedroza gives calm, straightforward shots of hangouts in Paris—the romance of dimly lit spaces, of an evening’s early stages of debauchery, and of a slice of pizza.

These photographs emerged from Pedroza’s studies in Paris during 2009 and 2010. While photography itself functions in degrees of stillness—capturing, suspending, and depicting moments for infinite pictorial existence—Pedroza’s photographs have an echo to them. These sounds reverberate in the washed-out backgrounds of Pedroza’s nightly strolls, in the objects once loved, but set aside, and in the fleeting engagements with strangers. There is a softness in each frame that invites a viewer to stay awhile, to share a drag of a cigarette, and to watch the smoke make its way quickly into the sky.

Opening Reception Thursday, October 4th 5-10PM

Shaniqwa Jarvis West Coast Book Launch And Signing @ Arcana

Shaniqwa Jarvis’ eponymous first book is now available at Arcana Books in Culver City. In this expansive monograph, Jarvis presents one hundred and sixty pages of editorial and personal work spanning two decades drawn from the photographer’s archive. This lovely hardbound volume published by Baque Creative features an introduction by photographer Ryan McGinley accompanied by a meticulous selection of pictures from her favorite personal series such as “Bathroom Portraits” - shot in the toilets of bars in the early 2000s - along with editorial work for clients like The Gap, The New York Times, Supreme, Billboard, and Riposte that includes portraits of SZA, Lee Scratch Perry, George Condo, Cardi B, and a few requisite selfies.

Ms. Jarvis’ work is known for blending the aesthetics of modern fashion photography with the sensitive, unfiltered emotion of art portraiture. In some of her best-loved imagery she captures vivid reality across a wide variety of subjects that always appear to be an extension of herself. The images speak to raw, disparate feelings imbued with a deep sparkling optimism. The photos in this collection are an invitation to join Jarvis on a journey to see the world from her vantage point - one that is female, black, tirelessly hardworking, and brimming with raucous, positive vibrations. These are images of celebrities who seem like best friends, vintage shots of downtown New York notables in their heyday, children, loved ones in all colors of the rainbow, and delicate landscapes and travel souvenirs. Here is sorrow and joy commingling in pictures, many of them highly autobiographical, all representing a progressive and optimistic world. photographs by Summer Bowie

Todd Weaver Signing Copies Of His New Book @ Zebulon In Los Angeles

The book’s title 36 refers first, to the number of frames Weaver captured of each subject, and secondly, to the number of subjects he captured. Each shoot would only be 3 minutes long, each photograph taken every 5 seconds. I would photograph while I stood in one place and ticked off the time audibly, with the subject free to move in and out of frame as they desired. The book includes portraits of Ariana Papademetropoulos, Devendra Banhart, Andrü Sisson, Father John Misty, Robbie Williamson, Double Diamond Sun Body and more. The book is available for pre-order at www.toddweaver.com. photograph by Oliver Maxwell Kupper
