Ed Ruscha Screening of "Premium" Starring Larry Bell Screening This Week @ Hauser Wirth New York

One of only two films made by Ed Ruscha over his dynamic artistic career, Premium is a filmic translation of 1969's Crackers, one in an influential series of conceptual photography books created by Ruscha in the 1960s and 70s. Both the book and the film are based on the short story "How to Derive the Maximum Enjoyment from Crackers" written by Mason Williams, a musician and comedic writer for the Smothers Brothers, and a childhood friend of Ruscha's. Featuring perhaps one of the greatest appearances by salad in art history, Premium stars fellow L.A. art icon Larry Bell on a hilarious and absurd late-night adventure. Ruscha's film is an exploration of storytelling and the conventional narrative codes of Hollywood, featuring his signature deadpan humor and keen translation of the contemporary American condition. Very sad to learn of the passing of the legendary Barbara “Bobbie” Stauffacher Solomon who AUTRE featured in the SS23 Utopia issue. She was 95. Her legendary supergraphics are on view now at the @sfmoma for all to see. Bobbie studied graphic design in Switzerland under the legendary Armin Hofmann in the late 1950s. Her most famous project, the graphic identity for Sea Ranch, a planned community imagined by architects Al Boeke and Lawrence Halprin on the Sonoma Coast, was a blend of Swiss Style and California Modernism, an amalgam of irreverent hippie cool and clean straight lines in oversized texts and symbols called ‘supergraphics.’ #barbarastauffachersolomon #supergraphics #searanch

Featuring our fifth cover, an original artwork by Jeffrey Gibson, the first Indigenous artist to be chosen for the United States Pavilion with a solo album exhibition at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Since the 1990s, Jeffrey Gibson has been weaving his own Native traditions and queer history with pop cultural references—particularly song titles, into kaleidoscopic textile works, paintings, videos, and performances. A member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, he is the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States with a solo presentation at the Venice Biennale. His exhibition at the US Pavilion, the space in which to place me, takes its title from Oglala Lakota poet Layli Long Soldier’s poem e Sápa.
