Ryan McGinley "Early" @ Team Gallery In New York

Team Gallery presents a show of early work by Ryan McGinley. The photographs on view in this exhibition were made by Ryan McGinley in New York City from 1999 to 2003, a period defined by hopelessness for many Americans – synonymous with the onset of the Bush Era, 9/11 and its aftermath. These vérité images, which pre-date his famed “road trip” series, capture the exploits of the artist’s social circle, members of an outlaw creative community based in New York’s Lower East Side. This body of work – a significant addition to the legacy of American subculture photography forged by the likes of Peter Hujar, David Wojnarwicz, Philip-Lorca diCorcia and Nan Goldin – is characterized by McGinley’s idiosyncratic admixture of hopefulness and self-awareness, as well as his unembarrassed disclosure of the melodrama of youth, its inextricably intertwined joy and heartbreak: the artist shows us his debauched, frequently naked friends, laughing and weeping, taking drugs and having sex, tagging walls and pissing off roofs. Ryan McGinley "Early" will be on view until April 1 at Team Gallery, 83 Grand Street, New York. photographs by Adam Lehrer

"More Than A Muse" Group Show Featuring Larry Clark, Sandy Kim, Ryan Mcginley, and Dash Snow @ 65 Ludlow in New York

“More Than A Muse” aims to explore those relationships between artist and subject that exceed creative companionship and are based on inextricable, emotional ties. These relationships are those of parents, lovers, siblings and friends- those who have a visceral and often complex connection to the artist. The photographs then are more than standard depictions of beauty or intrigue but unfiltered glimpses into the intimate lives of two beings through the eyes of someone emotionally invested. The subjects are shown in their rawest form as they are photographed intuitively by the artist. This show is unique in that both photographer and muse will be recognized as artists. This is to further show the muse as more than simply the vision. They are the vehicles by which it comes to life. The symbiotic relationship is the basis of the work; it would not exist without the other. More Than A Muse will be on view until September 18 at 65 Ludlow in New York. photographs by Adam Lehrer

Ryan McGinley "Winter" Opening At Team Gallery In New York

On view in New York are McGinley’s groundbreaking Winter photographs, which portray his nude figures in frozen landscapes. There is virtually no photographic or cinematic precedent for these works: to capture naked bodies in such extreme conditions took profound measures of precaution, audacity and sacrifice on the part of all involved. The artist and his team invented and improvised manifold contrivances, employing the likes of ice-fishing tents, propane tanks and rock-climbing gear, in order to enable the production of these images. These pictures, unlike the Fall photos, feature hyper-limited palettes of whites, greens, blues and greys, finding intrigue and variance instead in the texture and organic architecture of ice formations. Impossibly, the unclothed bodies appear native to their wintry settings. Ryan McGinley "Winter" will be on view until December 20th, 2015 at Team Gallery, 83 Grand Street, New York. Julianna Vezzetti
