Highlights From "The 14th Factory," A 3-Acre Art Installation by Hong Kong-Based Artist Simon Birch in Los Angeles

The 14th Factory is a monumental, multiple-media art installation that will transform an empty industrial warehouse near downtown Los Angeles into a mythic universe created collaboratively through video, installation, sculpture, sound, paintings, and live performance. The 14th Factory weaves together elements of popular culture–science fiction, punk music, graphic novels, and film–with critical re-examinations of social and historical narratives, especially interconnections between East and West. Conceived by Hong Kong-based British artist Simon Birch, the vision of The 14th Factory is to create a new, independent paradigm for socially-engaged art, a kind of guerilla action where art occupies and re-energizes underutilized or even derelict urban spaces and gifts them back to the community in the form of a transformative experience. Very sad to learn of the passing of the legendary Barbara “Bobbie” Stauffacher Solomon who AUTRE featured in the SS23 Utopia issue. She was 95. Her legendary supergraphics are on view now at the @sfmoma for all to see. Bobbie studied graphic design in Switzerland under the legendary Armin Hofmann in the late 1950s. Her most famous project, the graphic identity for Sea Ranch, a planned community imagined by architects Al Boeke and Lawrence Halprin on the Sonoma Coast, was a blend of Swiss Style and California Modernism, an amalgam of irreverent hippie cool and clean straight lines in oversized texts and symbols called ‘supergraphics.’ #barbarastauffachersolomon #supergraphics #searanch

Yesterday, before the Met Gala, we got a special preview of the @metmuseum Costume Institute’s Spring 2024 exhibition ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.’ This is what all the pomp and circumstance is all about. A true multi-sensorial and emotional feast of sight, sound, smell and sound. X-rays, molecular olfactory extraction, artificial intelligence, soundscapes, video projection and 3D modeling bring masterworks from the collection’s archives to life in an historic way - what curator Andrew Bolton says is the future of museum exhibitions the Met. Since the 1990s, Jeffrey Gibson has been weaving his own Native traditions and queer history with pop cultural references—particularly song titles, into kaleidoscopic textile works, paintings, videos, and performances. A member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, he is the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States with a solo presentation at the Venice Biennale.
