Mick Rock: Remembering Bowie and Alejandro Iñárritu: The Revenant Double Exhibition @ Taschen Gallery in Los Angeles

Mick Rock: Remembering Bowie features photographs of the late and legendary David Bowie by his once official photograph Mick Rock. In the other room of Taschen gallery in Los Angeles, behind-the-scenes of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant. A selection of photographs from Kimberley French are on display alongside props and relics from the film, charting the making of this critically-acclaimed epic through arresting visuals of the film’s extreme conditions and serene settings. The exhibit will be an exclusive first look at material for an upcoming Tascene Collector’s Edition book, The Revenant, signed and limited, with a portfolio of prints. Celebration for The Opening of Mick Rock's "David Bowie: Shooting For Stardust" At Taschen Gallery in Los Angeles

In 1972, David Bowie released his groundbreaking album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. With it landed Bowie’s Stardust alter-ego: A glitter-clad, mascara-eyed, sexually-ambiguous persona who kicked down the boundaries between male and female, straight and gay, fact and fiction into one shifting and sparkling phenomenon of ’70s self-expression. Together, Ziggy the album and Ziggy the stage spectacular propelled the softly spoken Londoner into one of the world’s biggest stars. A key passenger on this glam trip into the stratosphere was fellow Londoner and photographer Mick Rock. Rock bonded with Bowie artistically and personally, immersed himself in the singer’s inner circle, and, between 1972–1973, worked as Bowie’s official photographer. Last night, Taschen Gallery in Beverly Hills celebrated the launch of the book and an exhibition of selected photographs from the tome for an exhibition entitled David Bowie: Shooting For Stardust, which will be on view until October 11. photographs by Oliver Maxwell Kupper

The Flamboyant Life & Forbidden Art of George Quaintance @ The Taschen Gallery in Los Angeles

George Quaintance lived and worked during an era when homosexuality was repressed, when his joyful paintings and physique photos could not depict a penis. In an era before Stonewall, the sexual revolution, gay rights and the AIDS crisis, Quaintance and his high-camp erotic art existed in a demi-monde of borderline legality. Currently, Taschen Gallery is presenting The Flamboyant Life & Forbidden Art of George Quaintance, the first public show of works by this culturally significant artist. Seventy years since the creation of his first physique painting, discover Quaintance's masculine fantasy world, populated by Greek gods, Latin lovers, lusty cowboys and chiseled ranch hands. Accompanying pieces from photographer and gay magazine pioneer Bob Mizer, as well as from the legendary Tom of Finland, show Quaintance’s leading influence on the gay publishing and art scene. Mario Testino In Your Face

A new book out now by Taschen entitled Mario Testino. in Your Face is an unorthodox collection of various images chosen by Testino from the span of his 30-year career reflects the diversity of his work, ranging from fashion and advertising shots to sexually-charged images and autobiographical photos. Full of color, life, and humor, this selection is a testament to the sheer brilliance of a tireless chronicler of fabulousness. This book is published in the occasion of the In Your Faceexhibitionat the MFA Boston (which opens October 17, 2012 and runs to February 3, 2013).

In-your-face, achingly simple, deceptively frank, the work of Christopher Wool is so very New York. Though he owes a debt to abstract expressionism and pop art, he completely transcends—even demolishes—these genres. Whether it’s a text-based painting or an abstract spray-painted piece, his work is immediately engaging. Wool questions painting, like many other artists in his generation, but he doesn’t provide any easy answers. “The harder you look the harder you look,” he puts it in one of his word paintings, and that is an excellent example of how he states the obvious whilst provoking us to think deeper about what seems obvious. This September a new monograph will be available on Taschen – In over 400 pages, all of Wool's work phases are covered in large-scale reproductions, accompanied by production Polaroids and installation photos by Wool himself. Monroe by Norman Mailer and Bert Stern

On the anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death – August 25th – Taschen will release a hardcover version of Norman Mailer/Bert Stern: Marilyn Monroe. Taschen has paired Norman Mailer’s original text with Bert Stern’s photographs from the legendary Last Sitting—widely considered the most intimate photographs of Monroe ever taken—to create a fitting tribute to the woman who, at the time of her death in 1962, was the world’s most famous, a symbol of glamour and eroticism for an entire generation. But though she was feted and adored by her public, her private life was that of a little girl lost, desperate to find love and security. Mailer’s Marilyn is beautiful, tragic, and complex. Taschen is releasing the second edition of erotic photographer Chas Ray Krider's Motel Fetish. The first edition has been long out of print and includes photographs in the vein of 1950s erotic set in classic seedy motels. Editor Eric Kroll says, "A number of years ago I began to see distinctive layouts in Hustler's Leg World that got me nervous. The photographs were that good. Whoever it was had style and made the women his women. Krider women. Women I began to desire on a monthly basis. In the world of professional golf there is an expression 'the world's greatest golfer not to win a major tournament. The World Through Linda's Lens

A retrospective of Linda McCartney's life and photography....In 1966, during a brief stint as a receptionist for Town and Country magazine, Linda Eastman snagged a press pass to a very exclusive promotional event for the Rolling Stones aboard a yacht on the Hudson River; her fresh, candid photographs of the band were far superior to the formal shots made by the band’s official photographer, and she was instantly on the way to making a name for herself as a top rock ’n’ roll photographer. In May 1968, with her portrait of Eric Clapton, she entered the record books as the first female photographer to have her work featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. During her tenure as the leading photographer of the late 1960s’ musical scene, she captured many of rock’s most important musicians on film, including Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Doors, and the Grateful Dead. In 1967, Linda went to London to document the "Swinging Sixties," where she met Paul McCartney at the Bag ’O Nails club and subsequently photographed The Beatles during a launch event for the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Paul and Linda fell in love, and were married on March 12, 1969. For the next three decades, until her untimely death, she devoted herself to her family, vegetarianism, animal rights, and photography. From her early rock ’n’ roll portraits, through the final years of The Beatles, via touring with Wings to raising four children with Paul, Linda captured her whole world on film. Her shots range from spontaneous family pictures to studio sessions with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, as well as artists Willem de Kooning and Gilbert and George. Always unassuming and fresh, her work displays a warmth and a feeling for the precise moment that captures the essence of any subject. Whether photographing her children, celebrities, animals, or a fleeting moment of everyday life, she did so without pretension or artifice.  A retrospective volume by Taschen—selected from her archive of over 200,000 images—is produced in close collaboration with Paul McCartney and their children. As such, it is a moving personal journal and a lasting testament to Linda’s talent. Collector's Edition limited to 750 copies, numbered and signed by Sir Paul McCartney.  Also available in two Art Editions of 125 copies each with a photographic print.  A release is set for this May. www.taschen.com
