WORK IN PROGRESS ๐ŸŽ๏ธ The logistical ballet of getting a McLaren Artura GT4 race car custom-wrapped by @mickalenethomas for @dartcarproject delivered to the @fontainebleaumiamibeach where it will be on view in the hotel’s Departures Drive during @artbasel week (presented by Autre Magazine). In Autre’s FW25 WIP issue , racecar driver @zoebarryracing takes the McLaren around the track in West Virginia (photographed by @amandademme with support from @caddis_life ) and speaks to veteran driver Lyn St James about the trials and tribulations of working in a field dominated by the preconceived notions of how much women can achieve behind the wheel. Legendary actor Udo Kier has passed away at the age of 81. Born in the ruins of World War II, he escaped a world of violence to become a muse to Warhol and countless artists and directors. With his thick German accent, he had a chameleonic presence on the silver screen that was magnetic and transfixing. We were lucky to spend an afternoon with Kier for Autre’s second issue at his home and pool in Palm Springs on a 115 degree day. Autre’s FW25 “work in progress” issue is officially out now. In the pages of this issue, we took an experimental, provocative, deconstructed approach. We stripped our logo from the cover. We stripped the ads from the inside pages. We zoomed into the contemporary nature of work AND process in the 21st century—a gig economy of burnout and radical inequality. From prehistoric biology to PR to movie making and race car driving. How do we survive, creatively, in a time of extreme existential crisis? The issue is also, loosely, an exploration of magazine making and the role of cultural synthesizers in a time when print media is more exciting and more read than ever, but is virtually unsupported and challenged by algorithmic, attention driven social media and AI. In our cover story with Betsy Johnson, she curates five years of artifacts—notes, relics and trash—from her creative process to reveal a psychological portrait of an artist of our time. The evening opened with a captivating panel featuring @caltechedu astrophysicists Katherine de Kleer, Cameron Hummels, and Mike Brown, moderated by Autre’s managing editor @summer.bowie , who guided a conversation spanning black holes, dark matter, and the possibility of life beyond Earth.
