This Monday, the fashion world was saddened to hear of the death of Italian designer Elio Fiorucci. Known as “The King of Jeans,” the Milanese designer’s raunchy, colorful fashions “sold America back to America.” His kitschy, recycled style broke the harsh, conservative boundaries of haute-couture, gaining international popularity with his low-cost materials and everyday fashions. The Fiorucci name was a staple in the jet-set world of youth and alternative culture in the New Wave era. However, despite fame and acclaim, poor management and legal issues separated Fiorucci from his brand into the 21st century. Interior design guru Rossana Orlandi said Fiorucci was “the point of reference for an entire generation.” Giorgio Armani called him “revolutionary.” Fiorucci recently celebrated his 80th birthday. Legendary actor Udo Kier has passed away at the age of 81. Born in the ruins of World War II, he escaped a world of violence to become a muse to Warhol and countless artists and directors. With his thick German accent, he had a chameleonic presence on the silver screen that was magnetic and transfixing. We were lucky to spend an afternoon with Kier for Autre’s second issue at his home and pool in Palm Springs on a 115 degree day. The evening opened with a captivating panel featuring @caltechedu astrophysicists Katherine de Kleer, Cameron Hummels, and Mike Brown, moderated by Autre’s managing editor @summer.bowie , who guided a conversation spanning black holes, dark matter, and the possibility of life beyond Earth. First stop off the plane from Paris for an up close and personal peek at Dario Vitale’s brilliant and romantic debut collection for @versace at @justoneeye in Los Angeles . A brilliant collection of high and low materiality—from silk to denim. Bold colors and fusion of 1980s high glam with a tinge of 1920s Italian modernism and lots of sex appeal. Unbuttoned flies and open slips with a selection of prints from Gianni’s early 90s collections—including his iconic Miami collection. And of course lots of Medusa insignia who was raped and murdered for her beauty and turned into a monster.
