As the shadow of fascism falls over Los Angeles, few exhibitions feel as chillingly timely as POLICE STATE by Nadya Tolokonnikova (@pussyriot), now on view at @moca’s warehouse space—just steps from where the Trump administration has deployed armed forces against civilians. Tolokonnikova, who served time in a Russian prison for the same defense of freedom, has reconstructed her former cell here. It’s a claustrophobic monument to resistance, its walls lined with artwork by political prisoners, its air filled with haunting Russian lullabies and ambient soundscapes. A small monitor flickers with smuggled footage from inside a real Russia penal colony. The effect is visceral, poetic, and pointed: a stark reminder that freedom is fragile—and must be defended.
