Daniel Johnston In Los Angeles For "Hi, How Are You" Art Opening @ MAMA Gallery

MAMA gallery presents "Hi, How Are You?," an immersive exhibition exploring the art, music and mind of prolific cult singer-songwriter-artist, Daniel Johnston. The November 7, 2015 opening reception will feature the world premiere of the short film, Hi, How Are You Daniel Johnston, directed by Gabriel Sunday and starring Daniel Johnston. Hi, How Are You is an exhibition about Daniel’s past and present. "Through creative visions of madness and hope, we witness an aging musician coming to terms with the dreams of yesteryear." This unique exhibition of Daniel Johnston works explores his past and present art, exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment. Daniel Johnson: Hi, How Are You? will be on view from November 7 to November 11, 2015 at MAMA Gallery, In Los Angeles

'Slamsection' Curated by Leo Fitzpatrick @ Steinsland Berliner

Stockholm’s Gallery Steinsland Berliner presents their latest show curated by Leo Fitzpatrick. Entitled SLAMSECTION, the exhibition brings together some of the artist, curator and actor’s favorite East Coast artists including Dave Sandey of Fuck This Life, the late great Dash Snow, Mark Gonzales and Richard Kern. One of Norway’s most aspiring artists is featured too in the form of Gardar Eine Einarsson, alongside the colorful Eddie Martinez and iconic skateboard photographer, Tobin Yelland. So is the outsider musician Daniel Johnston. SLAMSECTION will be on view until May 16, 2015 at Gallery Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm. 

Musique Plastique at Agnès B

Now open at Agnès B's Howard Street gallery an exhibition entitled Musique Plastique, a group exhibit "exploring the ongoing interaction between the visual arts and music." Curated by Jean François Sanz, the show will feature music-themed pieces by the likes of Jean Tobias Bernstrup, Hisham Bharoocha, Etienne Charry, Brian DeGraw, Daniel Johnston, Jonas Mekas, Thurston Moore, David Shrigley, Alan Vega, Ben Vida and Liz Wendelbo. Musique Platique is on view until August 25 at 50 Howard Street, New York, and be sure to head to the Agnès B gallery website to download a compilation by the artists involved.

Daniel Johnston has spent the last 30 years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams. Daniel has collaborated with the likes of Jad Fair (a founding member of Half Japanese), the Butthole Surfers, and members of Sonic Youth. A prolific songwriter, his lyrics focus on a range of familiar American themes, including the joys and pains of love, the exploits of comic book characters such as Jack Kirby's Captain America, and the allure of rock and roll. Throughout Daniel’s life as a musician, Daniel has been an equally prolific visual artist. In recent years, Daniel has gained acclaim and respect for his art that could possibly surpass his legendary status as a musician and songwriter. While at first glance, Daniel’s art might give the impression that this is the work of an “outsider” artist, Daniel’s visual work communicates the same deep content and startling impact that his songs carry. In 2006 Daniel was featured in The Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennial. From December 3 to January 3 the Blast Gallery in New Jersey presents Lost But Free. Museo Pecci di Prato in Florence, Italy presents an exhibition entiled LIVE! Art Meets Rock. The exhibition, curated by Luca Beatrice and Marco Bazzini, adopts a suggestive perspective to show how the history of contemporary art and of rock music have followed parallel paths to contribute to the construction of the cultural universe of the last forty years. Music and the visual arts have crossed and overlapped, over time, engendering a unified and consistent landscape; what draws them together is the performative dimension, articulated according to the specific occasion within an exhibition or a concert. LIVE!offers a parallel and original reading of historic events by exhibiting paintings, sculptures, installations, video clips, artworks, LPs, graphic works, photographs, magazines and films. Artists include Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, William English, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, David LaChapelle and more. The exhibition will be accompanied by Live!, a book published by Rizzoli with contributions by Luca Beatrice and Marco Bazzini. LIVE!
