Connoisseurs of world order fill Ian Davis’s canvases, their picturesque and surreal stomping grounds an ode to both beauty and horror. The eeriness of his hyper-structured displays is overlaid by a rhythmic attitude and hip-hop influence. Davis’s landscapes keep a certain distance from the scenes they portray—the viewer is implicated at altitude, surveying a scene as you might an out-of-body experience. The entrapments of the modern day—wealth, power, surveillance—are articulated by a contemporary rendition of art history’s revered flâneurs. DISEMBODIED builds and continues conversations around the violence, ecstasy, and epiphany within out-out-body experiences as-seen from the perspective of those on the ground—the leaps of faith we take to believe those who say their souls depart while their bodies remain. The works in the exhibition cover a wide swath of allegorical and tangible disembodied states, including the spiritual, the telegraphic, the psychedelic, the dissociative-induced, artificial intelligences, and alien encounters.

As we’re all seemingly inexplicably returning to 2016, we keep thinking about the wise words of this sage mouse by @ryanjgander which was on view at @camdenarts176 and the power of nostalgia. In times of extreme upheaval, nostalgia acts as a psychological balm, an evolutionary mechanism, for survival and meaning. Ignoring the fact that meta is most likely training their machine learning technologies through the aging of our faces, zooming back to the past offers a reprieve from the violence of the present, even when that time was also marked by the same violence. On social media, we live through these loops through algorithmically generated mechanisms that latch on to our hormonal neuropathways, it keeps us scrolling, docile, unable to resist. #nostalgia #2016 #flashback #ryangander

In our FW25 Work In Progress issue we took a pivot into the world of professional racecar driving with a focus on two female drivers: @lynstjames and @zoebarryracing . Now retired, Lyn St. James set astonishing precedents on the track: the first woman to exceed 200 miles an hour on a closed oval, and the first to win an endurance race solo. The sport nearly killed her. In 1986 at Riverside Raceway, another driver triggered a crash that launched her Ford Probe into the air and onto its roof, erupting into a fireball with St. James trapped inside. She escaped—miraculously—without a scratch. Mike E. Brown is Richard and Barbara Rosenberg Professor of Planetary Astronomy at Caltech. He has discovered dozens of dwarf planets (and demoted Pluto from planet to dwarf planet), and is currently hot on the trail of Planet Nine—a hypothesized body that is possibly the fifth largest planet of our solar system. Cameron Hummels is a research scientist and Director of Astrophysics at Caltech. To better understand petro-imperialist ambitions in Venezuela—and the environmental devastation they leave behind—we revisit our interview with human rights lawyer Steven Donziger from our FW24 Citizen issue (🔗 in bio). Donziger’s lawsuit, filed on behalf of Amazonian Indigenous communities, targeted Chevron (formerly Texaco) for dumping more than 16 million gallons of toxic wastewater into the Ecuadorian rainforest—an environmental catastrophe thirty times larger than the Exxon Valdez spill. The contamination poisoned rivers, farmland, and drinking water, triggering a brutal wave of cancers, miscarriages, and birth defects across the region. The case ultimately resulted in the largest damages judgment ever awarded in an environmental lawsuit. Venezuela’s entanglement with foreign oil interests has long been shaped by resistance as much as extraction. In the 1970s, following decades of domination by U.S. and European oil companies, the Venezuelan state moved to reclaim sovereignty over its natural resources, nationalizing its oil industry in 1976 and forming Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA). The move was intended to curb foreign exploitation and redirect oil wealth toward national development—an assertion of independence that directly challenged U.S. petro-capital interests. Nearly fifty years later, that struggle persists in a different form. Today, Chevron is the only U.S. oil company operating in Venezuela under a special U.S. government license, granted amid sanctions and geopolitical negotiations. Its presence underscores the cyclical nature of petro-imperialism: even after nationalization, foreign oil power continues to re-enter through exceptions, loopholes, and crises—often with environmental and human costs that echo the past.
