Deana Lawson, Dash Snow, and Al Steiner are all three part of a group of  contemporary New York artists who express themselves through photographs and videos inspired by their way of life: punk, rock, sex, drugs, hip hop. The HΓ©lΓ¨ne Bailly gallery in Paris will introduce these artists in an exhibition, AestheticSexAmerica from March 16 to April 14, 2012.

Allegoria Sacra

The Art Gallery presents the Australian premiere of Allegoria Sacra by the internationally celebrated artist collective AES+F. This spectacular video work is, in essence, a digital painting which seduces and overwhelms the viewer through its visual and aural splendor. Allegoria Sacra is inspired and named after a painting by the Renaissance master Giovanni Bellini, which is believed to represent purgatory. In purgatory all souls wait for the Last Judgment. For AES+F, the modern international airport, as a place where people are suspended in time and place, is the contemporary allegory for purgatory. Allegoria Sacra (see trailer after the jump) is now on view until June 3, 2012 at The Art Gallery of South Australia.

Richard Prince & Picasso

Artist Richard Prince stands in front of one his paintings at the Museo Picasso MΓ‘laga for an exhibition entitled Prince/Picasso.  No other contemporary artist could reinterpret Picasso in this particular way. Prince "approaches Picasso by using a tactic of radical cannibalisation of the artist, causing the spectator to feel alienated. By distancing us in this way, we are warned to revise our perceptions and conventional views on sexuality, eroticism and desire." Lise Sarfati: On Hollywood

The Rose Gallery in Los Angeles is currently presenting two exhibitions of photographs by Paris based Lise Sarfati.  On view now until March 26, a series of photographs, entitled On Hollywood, is a unique and intimate survey of women in and around Hollywood and starting March 31, another series that explores the identity of women in a post-modern suburban landscape, entitled She, will be on view until May 8, 2012. RAMMELLZEE: THE EQUATION

Rammellzee (pronounced "Ram: Ell: Zee") was a painter, performance artist, confidant of the late 70s early 80s downtown New York art scene and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and is oft credited as the progenitor of the modern graffiti movement. On March 3, The Suzanne Geiss Company will present its inaugural exhibition Rammellzee: The Equation, The Letter Racers. Rammellzee’s manifestoes β€œIconoclast Panzerism” and β€œGothic Futurism” explored graffiti’s ability to liberate the transcendental powers of the alphabet that had been corrupted by Western culture. A manifestation of the artist’s theories, his Letter Racers were created over more than 15 years in his loft, The Battle Station. They are being shown in New York for the first time. Rammellzee: The Equation is on view from March 8 to April 21, 2012 at The Suzanne Geiss Company, 76 Grand Street, New York. 

Eatso

This amazing image was sent to us from photographer Destiny Mata who says, "I take pictures with whatever camera I can get my hands on. Β I've never owned a camera of my own and I like it that way. Β It pushes me to take advantage of having a camera that a friend has lent me to shoot with for a couple of weeks and document and capture a piece of my life or anything else that tell a story. Β I grew up in New York City the city was my playground. Β I grew up homeless with my single mother sleeping in shelter homes and subways." The above photograph is of her friend Eatso who is heading to jail for a graffiti charge – "I took photos of him naked on a couch....we set fire in the woods expressing his emotion and life obstacles to come." Vanity Disorder

Ashes

He gives his heart, Like he gives out bills. Throws his dollars, When they look twice. In the long, dark corridor He sees a light, And he burns, He yearns, For her life. For body sweat, Blood, Pubic hair. She’s unshaven, She is beautiful, So he is beautiful. In the darkness He twists, he screams, He loses control Of his thoughts, his words. Endless, endless, His money’s spent and His feelings are senseless.

At break of dawn, The snow falls in that corridor And extinguishes her. 500 years too young, He has a dream to live that long. He seeks the answer of immortality, So he follows her and finds her In a snow-covered field, In flames. A wild fire, Yellow, Red, Black. Screaming, howling, calling his name As she burns, She burns, Burns to a crisp, Burns to nothing In that fire in the snow.

And the wind carries the flame Ignites her hair her feathers.

The flames reflect in his eyes as He watches her scatter. Sinking to the ground, Becoming nothing. Ashes, The color of the cloudy sea, Her eyes, disappear Into Earth. She is nothing. Nothing is everything. He closes his eyes. Harry cries, and cries. What a beautiful sight, What a heavenly light! What a dream, To be nothing. β€œI want to be nothing.” His hands clasp his face, His bony knees dig the dirt. Harry looks up: He looks for God. But he is gone. Long gone.

Harry chases the dying flames of the phoenix, And cries, β€œIgnite me! Ignite me!” But they only burn for the bird. He eats her ashes for strength. He’s hysterical. Endless, endless, His mind is gone, His feelings are senseless.

The grey snow falls around him, A call for new lovers to come to him. And there is silence. Let there be no light. Harry rises. He brushes the dirt off his knees, Eats the snow for clarity, Joins the others in the safety Of the illusion of reality. Harry forgets.

He forgets.

Direction, script and production by Adam and Tree Carr from the East London film/radio/event factory Today is BoringΒ in collaboration with the British Fashion Council. Β David Saunders, the designer behind David David was originally an artist and switched to fashion 7 years ago - he was once artist Tracey Emin's assistant. The film tells the tale of twoΒ strangersΒ who spend the night together  – the girl awakens first in the dude's apartment – either he has the weirdest roommate ever or she is completely losing her mind....
