As the shadow of fascism falls over Los Angeles, few exhibitions feel as chillingly timely as POLICE STATE by Nadya Tolokonnikova (@pussyriot), now on view at @moca’s warehouse space—just steps from where the Trump administration has deployed armed forces against civilians. Tolokonnikova, who served time in a Russian prison for the same defense of freedom, has reconstructed her former cell here. It’s a claustrophobic monument to resistance, its walls lined with artwork by political prisoners, its air filled with haunting Russian lullabies and ambient soundscapes. A small monitor flickers with smuggled footage from inside a real Russia penal colony. The effect is visceral, poetic, and pointed: a stark reminder that freedom is fragile—and must be defended. Northern Irish fashion designer @jonathan.anderson steps into his new role at @dior at a moment when the world feels at war with itself. He becomes the first sole creative director of all collections at the storied house since Monsieur Christian Dior. Like Dior, Anderson is no stranger to conflict. He grew up amid the ethno-nationalist violence of Northern Ireland’s Troubles, a childhood marked by bomb checks on the family car, hijacked school buses, and the memory of people shot in their vehicles. Christian Dior, too, was shaped by war. His sister Catherine, a member of the French Resistance, was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to a concentration camp, where she remained until liberation. In 1947, Dior named his debut fragrance Miss Dior in her honor. Now, in a sartorial zeitgeist marked by unrest and upheaval, the question lingers: what will be Jonathan Anderson’s New Look?
