The inaugural exhibition in the gallery, COMA presents ‘True Love Over Physics’, a group show exploring the nature of creation in its many forms and the idea of creation before and over anything else. Each artwork in the show approaches the theme individually, and together they present a uniform vision of varying patterns of creation and corresponding thought processes. Artists included in ‘True Love Over Physics’ are Cornelia Baltes, Gabriele Beveridge, Ophelia Finke, Brian Kokoska, Ebecho Muslimova, Oliver Osborne, Jon Pilkington, Yves Scherer, Colin Snapp and Chris Succo. True Love Over Physics will be on view until November 28, 2016 at COMA Gallery in Sydney, Australia. photographs by Darren Luk
Brian Kokoska "Trauma Sauna" Featuring Chelsea Culprit, Erik Frydenborg, and Ben Stone @ Ashes on Ashes in Los Angeles
Trauma Sauna presents a new series of paintings by Brian Kokoska within an installation of sculptures by Chelsea Culprit, Erik Frydenborg, and Ben Stone. Kokoska’s paintings, built from layers of drawing and color blocking, deny any illusion of depth and instead focus on an almost-flat rendering of imaginative scenes inhabited by androgynous figures, mystical creatures and frolicking devils. Crescent moons, stars, bones, genitals, flora and fauna are among the motifs that obsessively reappear, often anthropomorphized and evoking anxieties of sex, ecstasy and death. Accompanied by their morbidly playful and poetic titles, Kokoska’s paintings are gestural interpretations toward a fleeting experience or unknown place that is intentionally left murky and resistant to any one definitive perception by viewers. Trauma Sauna will be on view until October 22, 2016 at Ashes On Ashes Gallery, 2404 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA. photographs by Oliver Maxwell Kupper
A Fatal Personality: An Interview With Artist Brian Kokoska On Knives, His Inspirations, and His Current Must See Show in Paris →
Brian Kokoska, who can often be found with a knife clutched between his teeth or with a devious, wide-grinned smile, is one of our favorite artists working today. His paintings almost look like they belong to the hand of a child in art class working out some kind of trauma caused by alien abduction, but when you look closer, there is unexplainable magic going on. Perhaps Kokoska’s paintings are mirrored reflections of our own demons, or the artist’s – who really knows or cares – but what you will find amongst his crude oil painted visages is a sense of primordial familiarity. Maybe these creatures are our friends, or maybe they are out to kill us. Click here to read our interview with the artist.
'Fatal Dad' @ Brand New Gallery In Milan
Brand New Gallery presents Fatal Dad, a two-person exhibition featuring a new installation of works by Brian Kokoska with sculptures by Zack Davis. For this presentation, Kokoska has altered the gallery in shades of baby purple and incorporated Davis’ sensitive, achromic sculptures that are both bodily and diagrammatic in their exploration of space and form. Davis’ works press into the carpeted floor surrounded by purple, a non-spectral color that demands psychophysical efforts in the human brain to differentiate from violet. Fatal Dad will be on view until April 25 at Brand New Gallery in Milan.
