Creepy Crawl These Days "Raymond Pettibon Flyers" From The Collection Of Bryan Ray Turcotte @ These Days Gallery In Los Angeles

Creepy Crawl These Days "Raymond Pettibon Flyers" is an exhibition of over 130 original punk flyers from the late 1970s through mid-80s either created by or utilizing the artwork of influential artist Raymond Pettibon for bands such as Black Flag, Minutemen, Sacharine Trust, Circle Jerks, Wasted Youth, Throbbing Gristle, Red Cross and Descendents. Culled from the archives of sub-culture historian, archivist and collector Bryan Ray Turcotte, these unintentional pieces of art speak to us on many levels. Not only do they afford a look at the early work of this now-legendary and highly acclaimed artist, but they also offer a glimpse into the era’s underground DIY hardcore music scene. These DIY advertisements, torn and frayed, rescued from countless telephone poles and walls, suffering staples, tape and paste are physical representations of the 20th century’s most influential music scene and its most revered artist. The exhibition will be on view until February 26, 2017 at These Days in Los Angeles. photographs by Oliver Maxwell Kupper

Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon "Forgetting the Hand" @ David Zwirner in New York

David Zwirner presents an exhibition of collaborative works by Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon, on view at 533 West 19th Street in New York. Gallery artists since 1998 and 1995 respectively, this is the first time the pair has worked together. The drawings were originally created for a zine published by David Zwirner Books to coincide with Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 (September 2015). The collaboration began in Summer 2015 with the artists swapping the first of a series of drawings to be completed by the other. In a variation of the “exquisite corpse” method in which a partner is only given portions of an otherwise concealed drawing to work on, Dzama and Pettibon developed each other’s compositions through illustrations, collage, and writing. Just as the surrealists invented the technique in the early twentieth century as a playful and ultimately enriching exercise, the present drawings combine the two artists’ distinct styles in a revealing and often seamless fashion. In several works, it is almost impossible to determine who made what, which indicates how both strove to assimilate the other’s vision or anticipate his response. Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon "Forgetting the Hand" will be on view until February 20, 2016 at David Zwirner Gallery, 533 West 19th Street in New York. photographs by Adam Lehrer

Raymond Pettibon: Desire in Pursuyt of the Whole

Raymond_Pettibon_Desire_in_Pursuyt_of_the_Whole

Regen Projects in Los Angeles presents an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles artist Raymond Pettibon. Entitled Desire in Pursuyt of the Whole, this is the artist's ninth solo exhibition at the gallery. The show's title refers to Baron Corvo's complex novel of three interlocking plots where the author is thinly disguised as the protagonist. Pettibon's work often combines his own writing with quotes lifted from a myriad of sources ranging from quotidian to classical literature. His upcoming exhibition will feature new works in which the subject matter is a continuation of the artist's oeuvre: the landscape of war, politics, popular culture, art, literature, sports, religion, and sexuality. Pettibon will also exhibit his signature depictions of heroic surfers dropping into epic waves. Working in both large-scale color works and collage, the layering of images and text produces a multiplicity of elements that shift constantly in style, tense, and structure. On view until December 22.

Museo Pecci di Prato in Florence, Italy presents an exhibition entiled LIVE! Art Meets Rock. The exhibition, curated by Luca Beatrice and Marco Bazzini, adopts a suggestive perspective to show how the history of contemporary art and of rock music have followed parallel paths to contribute to the construction of the cultural universe of the last forty years. Music and the visual arts have crossed and overlapped, over time, engendering a unified and consistent landscape; what draws them together is the performative dimension, articulated according to the specific occasion within an exhibition or a concert. LIVE!offers a parallel and original reading of historic events by exhibiting paintings, sculptures, installations, video clips, artworks, LPs, graphic works, photographs, magazines and films. Artists include Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, William English, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, David LaChapelle and more. The exhibition will be accompanied by Live!, a book published by Rizzoli with contributions by Luca Beatrice and Marco Bazzini. LIVE! Art Meets Rock view at the Museo Pecci di Prato until September 16.
