Initiated in 2013, Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair (LAABF) is the companion fair to the NY Art Book Fair. Free and open to the public, the two fairs are among the leading international gatherings for the distribution of artists’ books, celebrating the full breadth of the art publishing community.
Held at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown Los Angeles over three days, the 2019 LA Art Book Fair hosted 390 exhibitors from 31 countries, including a broad range of artists and collectives, small presses, institutions, galleries, antiquarian booksellers, and distributors. The event draws more than 35,000 individuals including book lovers, collectors, artists, and art world professionals each year. For Maceo Paisley, a wide range of disciplines comes together in a positive feedback loop that supports his indefatigable exploration of human behavior. Using embodied inquiry, he investigates his own identity and presents his findings in performance and film. A prolific writer of prose, he just released his first book Tao of Maceo, which takes inventory of his personal beliefs and aims to define his perspective more acutely. Stepping off the stage, he cultivates community through his Chinatown gallery, Nous Tous and a multi-pronged community practice/social innovation agency called Citizens of Culture. The Los Angeles cultural world came out in droves to the Underground Museum September 15 to celebrate the closing of Water & Power and the opening of Muddy Water. Water & Power featured four artworks from the MOCA permanent collection, curated by the late Noah Davis at the Underground Museum. Glass Sabbath, a solo presentation of new works by Melanie Schiff is the artist’s first exhibition at the gallery. Schiff’s photographs revel in an assertion of the physicality of objects. Isolated from their use value, items are connected by an attention to shape and texture that nods to the tradition of still life painting. OOF Books presents "Homestead": a solo show featuring the work of artist and sculptor Chris Zickefoose. Zickefoose utilizes materials made readily available due to rapid development. In the Mojave desert there is a transformation occurring—old homestead cabins are being demolished or renovated in order to accommodate a growing desire to occupy the Joshua Tree area. Architectural debris piles up on these re-developed properties. Homestead encapsulates these fragments, paying homage to the past while also welcoming the future. Zickefoose removes the found materials from their context, allowing them to transcend themselves and take on a metaphysical utility. His sculptures challenge the ways in which we assign meaning and value to the physical world.
